| FILE INFO | | Caption | This a picture of Jeff Stotts in 1993 using a technique to remove the black band filament from an infected coral colony on a patch reef near Geiger Key. This black band removal process was developed by Dr. Harold Hudson. When sea water temperatures surpass the corals threshold for heat they expel their colorful symbiotic algae that gives them their color. We then see through the corals jelly-like transparent tissue to the brilliant white limestone skeleton. Water pollution and excessive physical abrasion can also cause corals to expel their symbionic partner. Coral bleaching is a term used to describe the temperature related expulsion. In 1993 a during a prolonged period of extremely hot weather the water in the Geiger Key Basin and surrounding adjoining patch reef became excessively warm. Warn water also promotes coral diseases as we can see from the following images. |
