| FILE INFO | | Caption | The shallow coral reefs in the Florida Keys span a distance of 220 miles. This is part of the third largest barrier reef system in the world. Corals grow in clean, clear nutrient free water that is between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This limits their growth between the latitudes of 30 degrees north and 30 degrees south of the equator, near the equatorial belt. Most corals grow in water that is less than 50 feet deep. Sunlight plays a critical role in the life and development of coral reefs. |
