OPEN THIS CATEGORY to read a narrative about all of the hurricanes that have impacted Key West since 1876. For two decades the reefs in the Florida Keys flourished with a minimal amount of storm damage. In 1998 things changed. Violent winter storms lashed out at the coral damaging great amounts of elkhorn coral. Late in the season Hurricane Georges passed over Key West decimating what coral had not been damaged during the winter. Prior to this diseases and infection plagued the reefs that were covered in macro-algae.
