Coral bleaching and disease continue to plague the corals on this reef for a second straight year.
Marquesas patch reef bleaching and stress
The Marquesas Keys are located about 25 miles west of Key West Florida. This patch reef is due south of the south western most cay. Record amounts of polluted agricultural runoff were diverted in to Florida Bay by the South Florida Water Management District under the watchful eye of the FKNMS. This created a toxic potpourri of pollution that swept over the Lower Florida Keys reefs exacerbating an episodic coral bleaching event that began in 1997. Very unusual photographs.

Montastrea cavernosa colonies show signs of polyp inflation as other corals on the reef suffer from bleaching.

These are some of the most dramatic images taken during the 1997 coral bleaching event. Most of the coral colonies on Sand Key reef exhibited strange and unusual symptoms.
