FILE INFO | Caption | Excessive amounts of nutrients in ocean water breed and feed algae, which in turns reduces the visibility in the water, which in turn decreases the amount of light that corals receive, which ultimately like here in the Keys results in dead reefs covered in fleshy algae. This slide is not of a dead reef but look closely and you will see an abundance of well established fleshy algae growing on the sea floor and on the living coral, this is a sign of too many nutrients in the water which was the case here in Key West back in 1997, prior to the 1997 bleaching event. |
